What We Do

The Main Objective

The main objective of the Siyakhana project is to establish model food and herb garden and models of simple ecological home systems. The design is guided by the principles and methods of Permaculture.

The Broader Aim

The broader aims of the Siyakhana system are food production, education, research, and empowerment.

Food and herbs are produced to address the needs of hundreds of disadvantaged inner-city beneficiaries. Empowerment is pursued through training and by developing income generation opportunities.

The Underlying Aim

The underlying aim is to develop a sustainable and productive environment for the improvement of the health, social and economic status of South African communities, particularly women. Ultimately, we intend to establish a healthy inner city environmental and recreational site based on designs and methods that may be replicated in other inner city communities.

To facilitate the sharing and development of knowledge, we conduct courses on a variety of topics related to permaculture.
