Permaculture Design

| Permaculture is a design method that aims to establish livelihood systems that mimic natural ecologies. It can be defined as the conscious design and maintenance of productive ecosystems which have the diversity, dynamic balance and resilience of natural eco-systems, but are geared towards peoples' needs. It is based on an understanding of natural systems, the wisdom contained in traditional livelihood systems, contemporary science and appropriate technology.
Permaculture pursues a harmonious and dynamic integration of land, built environment and people that is designed to supply food, medicine, energy, shelter and other needs in a sustainable way. It is a way for us to create the conditions for health and can therefore be seen as a holistic strategy for health promotion in line with the broader objectives of the WITS Health Promotion Unit.
