Parkrun: it’s a buzz word that seems to be doing the rounds amongst fitness fanatics and health enthusiasts. But what exactly is a ‘parkrun’? A parkrun is a free, monthly 5km timed run that is open to everyone and that is organised in a safe and pleasant environment. Everyone is encouraged to join: from walkers and junior to those who have more experience and higher level of fitness, the benefits are considerable.
With all the hype surrounding this new fitness craze and with a gorgeous park at our disposal, it seemed only fitting to find a way to launch a parkrun in the vicinity of Siyakhana. Gavin Fischer, an avid runner and a dedicated volunteer at Siyakhana, saw an opportunity and initiated a weekly Saturday morning parkrun at Bezuidenhout Park. Both staff and TUT students from Siyakhana have volunteered at many of these runs – as well as setting up a fresh-produce stand – and some have even run or walked the 5km distance.
Keen on participating in the next parkrun? Simply register before your first run, bring a printed copy of your barcode and meet at 8:00am at Bezuidenhout Park, Observatory Rd, Observatory.
